This is what our IT minister Dayanidhi Maran wishes and so does I.
Maran says he wants to give away broadband connections away for free. In an interaction with the media, Maran said “… free broadband service – even zero rental telephone lines – might be a reality in India…..”
Not sure how far is this from reality in India. Is there any other examples of free broadband globally? Is it practical given the fact that there are so many hugely profitable private players?
If not for free, Maran’s effort may definitely fuel the war going on between broadband providers to provide best services at cheapest rates. I remember paying 90/- per hours in cybercafés around 8 years back. Now I pay 900/- for 2mbps line all time connectivity.
Good signs for markets with internet as its backbone e.g. online games .
