IM interoperability is here

My machine is full of beta software, love to do lot of dogfooding.

This morning when I came, there was a different message on my Yahoo messenger which was showing. It was asking me if I want to use Yahoo Messenger to chat with MSN messenger users….wow! I murmured.

Microsoft and Yahoo have collaborated their IMs.

Consumers worldwide from Microsoft and Yahoo! will be able to take advantage of IM interoperability and join the limited public beta program. They will be among the first to exchange instant messages across the free services as well as see their friends’ online presence, view personal status messages, share select emoticons, view offline messages and add new contacts from either service at no cost.2 Yahoo! and Microsoft plan to make the interoperability between their respective IM services broadly available to consumers in the coming months.

I am still not sure how is this going to work, Yahoo is allowing me to add hotmail IDs and then associate with corresponding YahooID (if there is any) , I have spent some time on it asking Rajat to ping me on respective IDs using his yahoo messenger… but no success.

Whatever, its a great start for a day when I no longer have to worry about which IM is getting used by my buddy and I can ping him from any IM client.
