I recently got invitation from my friend to join a webservice Orkut , I joined it after showing much disinterest & postponing so many days.
Sometime back I tried Yahoo 360, Flickr(still using), Yahoo Album, Ryze, LinkedIn, and many others……. thanks to my hungry mind.
There is nothing wrong with Orkut. It has got many features including profile management, network, album, search….like many other online tools, slightly packaged differently, may be focussed for different section of users, which has got user friendly interface, working without glitches.
| But then what leaves me vexed? | ![]() |
Everytime I want to signup for a tool , I need to create profile, I need to upload photographs, get testimonials, blah blah blah…. it really sucks.
Its ok upto creating a profile, kindof registering your information with the system, but why do I need to upload my complete album online again? Its already there, Online, well maintained by some other service which I have been using over years.
Tommorrow, I will need to repeat all again, if I register with another such tool. Redundant content, redundant actions, Why? These services are not about providing original contents but just services around it.
What these service provide me with set of tool, which helps you keep *your data* online & managage it & probably help you network, forums, chat,x, y,z around that *data*. These services are just envelops around my data, your data.
Why dont we have a common open protocol to store the contents and then let these envelop services represent them whatever way they wanted to, build services like they have today.
Not only service providers will be freed from hassle of maintaining tonnes of data, users will also get rid of all redundant excercise and implications of having redundant data.
